Introduction to Haken
When discussing modern progressive rock, Haken is a name that stands out. This South English sextet, formed in 2004, has become a cornerstone of the genre, known for their adventurous and innovative sound. Each album is a unique journey, characterized by complex time signatures, daring songwriting, and majestic vocals. Haken’s reputation is cemented by critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base.
Musical Evolution
Haken’s debut album, Aquarius (2010), revived British prog rock, combining powerful hooks, intricate riffs, and vibrant keyboard lines. Their follow-up, Visions (2011), expanded their melodic and conceptual scope, leading to the groundbreaking The Mountain (2013), which blended elements of Gentle Giant, Metallica, and Soft Machine.
In 2016, Affinity saw the band exploring ’80s synths, followed by the heavier, conceptual duo of Vector (2018) and Virus (2020). Their latest album, Fauna, is a genre-defying masterpiece, with each track inspired by the animal kingdom and its connection to the human experience.
The Fauna Concept
Fauna is Haken’s most conceptually fascinating album yet. According to singer and co-founder Ross Jennings, each song is assigned an animal, reflecting both the animal kingdom and human world. Guitarist Richard Henshall adds that the album’s themes are personal, drawing parallels between animal characteristics and the band’s experiences.
For example, “Eyes Of Ebony,” the album’s finale, is about the near-extinct northern white rhinoceros and dedicated to Henshall’s late father. Other tracks, like “Taurus” and “Lovebite,” use animal metaphors to address broader themes such as migration and relationships.
Musical Diversity in Fauna
Musically, Fauna showcases Haken at their most diverse. From the heavy, polyrhythmic chords of “Taurus” to the delicate math rock of “Eyes Of Ebony,” and the bouncing basslines of “Island In The Clouds,” the album highlights the band’s dynamic range. The return of keyboardist Peter Jones adds a fresh sonic layer, enhancing the band’s intricate soundscapes.
